Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier with a significant decarbonization potential. In this session Davy Didden, team manager of the Energy for Indusrty team at Sweco, gives an overview of the (green) hydrogen value chain and highlights the key challenges in realizing hydrogen projects through a reference project case. The following topics are covered during the presentation: 

• Introduction: hydrogen, a decarbonization solution or problem? Low-emission (green/blue) hydrogen is often referred to as a Swiss army knife for decarbonization purposes. But not all applications of the molecule are equally interesting from a system perspective. Within this context, a brief overview is provided of the current state of affairs of hydrogen consumption, production and distribution.
• From theory to practice: low-emission (green/blue) hydrogen will be required in significant quantities to reach our net zero goals by 2050. The realization of hydrogen projects, however, faces several challenges today. Based on an ongoing large-scale hydrogen reference project, Sweco highlights the challenges in practically realizing a hydrogen project. Topics covered include engineering (from feasibility to detailed design), permitting, business case development, procurement/contracting, and construction management.
