From Collaboration to Circularity: Pioneering Medical Plastics Recycling in Healthcare

Inge Dewitte

Select4Care is a collaborative project between Denuo (the Federation of the Belgian Waste and Recycling Sector), VIL (Flemish Institute for Logistics), hospitals, recycling companies, MedTech manufacturers, and the social economy. Its goal is to improve the circular processing of medical plastic waste in Flemish hospitals.

The project focuses on single-use plastic materials that fall outside the infectious risk profile (such as trays, tubes, films, bottles, and syringes without needles). These materials are technically recyclable but are currently still largely incinerated.

The project provides recommendations for organizing sustainable collection systems in order to increase the recycling rate of plastics in the hospital sector. In doing so, it contributes to Flanders' broader climate and circular economy objectives.
