Numerical Simulation in the Hydrogen sector

Sébastien Gohy

GDTech is an engineering services company specializing in numerical simulation for over 30 years. Our company employs more than 200 people in Belgium, France, and North America. We support our clients throughout the entire design cycle: CAD and various simulations (structural, fluid, and systems).

This presentation will highlight several applications related to the production, storage, and use of hydrogen:

  • Modeling and simulation of various renewable electricity sources (wind and solar) used for hydrogen production, including the modeling and optimization of the corresponding grids; design of system architectures and their control; creation of digital twins for real-time operation.

  • Design and sizing of composite fiber tanks: fiber placement modeling and mechanical strength assessment; identification of material parameters and simulation of tests (burst, impact, and fire).

  • Cryogenics and thermodynamics of compressed hydrogen, development of custom compressors: evaluation of dynamic effects, sloshing, and reduction of wave amplitude through compartmentalization.

  • System architecture design and generation of digital twins for real-time control of transport systems; detailed simulations of multiphase flows in piping.

  • Development of multi-fuel compatible injectors (including hydrogen): optimization through simulation and qualification on test benches.

  • Combustion simulation: modeling of internal combustion (3D transient local or 0D/1D full engine); NOx emission estimation.

While a lot of attention goes to hydrogen production and transport, we shift the spotlight to its actual use. Our innovative fuel cell generates decentralized, zero-emission electricity — ideal for a wide range of applications. In this talk, we’ll briefly introduce our company and technology, followed by a few real-life projects. We’ll highlight how hydrogen was implemented on-site and how the logistical approach was handled. These tangible cases show that hydrogen isn’t just a promise — it’s already powering the world today.
