'Never waste a good crisis,' Winston Churchill is said to have remarked. Over the past five years, geopolitical events have twice confronted us with the harsh reality: Belgium is 80% dependent on dubious energy suppliers. At the same time, global warming is relentlessly taking its toll. To tackle both challenges, we need to increase our reliance on renewable energy. However, renewable energy is intermittent, which means that energy storage and flexibility are essential. In this presentation, the Vlaamse Energie Transitie Associatie (Flemish Energy Transition Association) provides insights into how we can address all these challenges and assesses the feasibility of doing so.
